Halloween is a holiday with deep roots in tradition and history.  Superstition and fear of the unknown shrouded the every day lives of ancient people and strange rituals brought some degree of comfort to folks when no logical explanations could be given.  Hundreds of years ago on All Hallows Eve, people believed that the spirits of the deceased were allowed to roam the earth freely.  Largely out of fear of what an encounter with an evil spirit with malevolent designs might mean for them, costumes were worn in an attempt to trick the spirits into thinking that the living were actually dead as well.  It became part of an annual ritual for these ancient people.
