Believe it or not, the Christmas use of red and green likely comes from a practice that was happening back during the Middle Ages, but interestingly enough it initially didn’t really have a whole lot to do with Christmas.  During the 1300’s, because people were largely illiterate, it was popular for churches to conduct plays in order to teach church doctrine or stories.  A popular day celebrated during this time period was that of Adam and Eve day, which at this time was celebrated on December the 24th.  On Adam and Eve day, the Paradise Play would recreate the story of the predicament of Adam and Eve while in the Garden of Eden.  A tree, representing the “Tree of Good and Evil” was needed, but during the winter months the only one that was available was a pine tree, thus this type of tree was used to portray the fruit-bearing foliage during the play. 

This pine tree, decorated beautifully with apples became so popular because of it’s use during The Paradise Play that many churches took to using one of them as a prop at the church during their celebrations at this time of the year.  The people of Germany took a particular liking to this tradition.   Over the years, it began to be a regular practice in Germany for every day people to have a pine tree inside their homes, decorated with apples in addition to nuts and sugar wafers that were also used as ornaments.  These lovely decorated trees, which were often left up through the Christmas holidays, gradually became heavily associated with Christmas.  The practice of putting up a Christmas tree came to America along with the German immigrants.  Once a primarily German tradition, the use of Christmas trees gained in popularity over the years, most particularly when in 1848, Queen Victoria decorated a tree in her home that was grandly featured in the London News.  Suddenly, the ancient tradition of the Christmas tree became highly fashionable and this ritual has continued up until this very day.  During the holidays, the Christmas tree is often the centerpiece of most people’s homes, green being the color of the evergreen tree itself, and red being one of the most popular choices used to trim it with.  The Paradise Tree had evolved into a Christmas tree, which in turn led to the association of red and green with Christmas forevermore.

French Maid: Back in the 19th century it was fashionable for wealthy ladies to have a personal “lady’s maid” to assist her in with her personal needs.  It became even more desired for the maid to be French.  The sexuality and sexual allure of these maids likely came from theatrical and burlesque productions of the day.  In any case, throughout time, the French Maids skirts got shorter, the necklines got lower and now the French Maid has become one of the most common sexual fantasy figures out there.

Cleavage.  Smart women everywhere know how to flaunt it.  Men will revere it.  It doesn’t seem to matter what age, shape or size cleavage comes in–all of it is worth a second look.  There is small cleavage, large cleavage, ginormous cleavage, semi-elongated cleavage, amped up cleavage and simply ready to rupture forth cleavage.  If you are a woman, chances are you already know what you have to work with in the cleavage department.  If you are a man, you just love to look at all those delicious mounds.  Sometimes the male reaction is nothing more than a nod and perhaps an appreciative glance.   Other times, when the cleavage shown is much more cosmic and reaches the level of a true over-achiever-the male reaction is bound to be much more dramatic.

Thank Hollywood:  Back sometime in the 1930’s, the Motion Picture industry came up with the Motion Picture Production Code.  This code was designed to decide what motion picture viewers of the day were going to be able to see and hear at the movies.  The term “cleavage” was created and became the term used to describe the  “the shadowed depression dividing an actress’ bosom into two distinct sections.” 

The Wicked Lady:  Apparently she must have been very, very naughty.  At least the movie by this same title was considered quite controversial in it’s day.  The film “The Wicked Lady” was a period piece with costumes that were considered historically accurate, and did indeed flaunt quite a bit of voluptuous cleavage.  In order for this British film to be shown in the U.S. and to adhere to the “code” several costly “cleavage-flaunting” scenes had to be re-shot.  

Treasure or Trashy:  We aren’t living in the 30’s or the 40’s anymore and women (and obviously men) are much more progressive in their thinking about the use of cleavage.  In the essay “A Brief History of Cleavage,” the American poet Wayne Koestenbaum discusses enthusiastically a woman’s bosom buffet and describes it as a “sign of sophistication…a gift.”  Knowing when and how to use the power of cleavage is an art that a wise woman will realize has a sultry power in and of itself.

Enough Is Enough:  There may be times when an overabundant cleavage shouldn’t be used.  Some image consultants feel that the exposing of any significant cleavage in the business world is inappropriate.  Erring on the side of caution in professional circumstances and keeping your cleavage under wraps may be prudent and classy.  Too much exposure in business situations may not give you exactly the kind of attention you are looking for. Such scenarios might be considered the cleavage-off limits zone.
